CMC senior builds pet waste composter for CARE shelter

Outside the Colorado Animal Rescue shelter (CARE) in Spring Valley sits a new composter introduced by Ramsey Bond, a Colorado Mountain College student majoring in sustainability studies. Adjacent to the composting bins sit two large plastic barrels, full of sawdust which aids in the elimination of odor as well as providing carbon for the composting process. The sawdust, a product that previously went to a landfill, is added to the first composting stage, on top of each day’s waste. Photo ©Hannah Johnson (CMC professional photography student)

But after participating in the Alpine Bank Latino/Hispanic Scholarship program, she earned an associate degree from Colorado Mountain College, a bachelor's from Regis University and, a few weeks ago, a master's in social work from the University of Denver. Here she's with her son Ian wearing his mother's graduation cap. "This is my favorite graduation picture," she said. Photo courtesy Yesenia Arreola
