Colorado Mountain College seeks 4-year degree program

Claire Helmick, a student at Colorado Mountain College’s West Garfield campus in Rifle, checks on a vial of fruit flies Thursday in biology class. A Rifle firefighter, Helmick said she’d like to eventually pursue a four-year degree in fire science. But she has three children and said she wouldn’t be able to move elsewhere for schooling. When Colorado Mountain College employee Erin Furman heard her employer wanted to begin offering four-year degrees, she immediately began thinking about going back to school.

CMC Olympians Win Another Silver

Ed. Note: The US Nordic Combined Team won its first-ever Olympic medal on Tuesday. Two of the four team members have taken classes at Colorado Mountain College: Johnny Spillane and Bill Demong. The following is reprinted from Steamboat Today:

Whistler, British Columbia — The U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team, led by two Steamboat Springs natives and an adopted New Yorker, took silver today in the team event, further defining this squad as the most successful Nordic combined group in American history.

Solar class offered online

International Film Series at Colorado Mountain College

Leadville – The Spanish film “Lovers of the Arctic Circle” (Los amantes del círculo polar) kicked off the Colorado Mountain College Timberline Campus International Film Series course Feb. 19. The 1998 film was directed by Julió Medém. It was be the first of eight original-language films with English subtitles to be shown this spring.

Phi Theta Kappa sponsors Help for Haiti spaghetti dinner

Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the two-year college, will be sponsoring a Spaghetti Dinner to help generate funds for the people of Haiti.

Thanks to the generous donations from Sodexo Dining Services, the CMC Glenwood Center and the greater community, all proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross and their efforts to provide help and support. Details after the jump.

Olympic athletes learn at CMC

At least nine athletes competing at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver have taken classes at Colorado Mountain College. Eight of them are competing for the US, while another is competing for Team Canada, though he lives in Vail. Because of its location, the Colorado Mountain College region draws world-class athletes who come to train at altitude and compete in international events. Whether earning a degree, keeping up with studies while they train, or gaining skills that will help them after their competitive days come to an end, Olympic athletes through the years have turned to Colorado Mountain College for their learning needs.
