The Colorado Mountain College Foundation recently welcomed a new member who is no stranger to the college, and selected a new chairman.

After a successful tenure as president of the Colorado Mountain College Board of Trustees, the elected board that oversees the college (see box), Doris Dewton of Edwards moved to the board of directors of the college’s fundraising arm, the CMC Foundation. Having completed two four-year terms on the elected trustee board, Dewton could
n’t run again because of term limits.
The CMC Foundation is familiar to Dewton: In her previous eight-year role on the college’s board of trustees, she was an ex officio, nonvoting director on the foundation board. Even before joining the college’s fundraising entity, she’s been instrumental in the Higher Education Resources and Opportunities (HERO) scholarship program
at the college’s Vail-Eagle Valley Campus in Edwards.
“We are so pleased to have Doris Dewton join us on our foundation board,” said Alexandra Yajko, CEO of the foundation. “Her hands-on experience with HER
O, as well as her outstanding leadership skills, will further the goals of the college’s foundation. She is so upbeat, with a marvelous, can-do attitude. She also brings us her great curiosity about the world and her passion for higher education.”
Glenn Davis, president of Alpine Bank’s Vail region, previously served as chairman of the CMC Foundation. He replaces Dewton as Eagle County’s representative on the college’s elected board of trustees.
Warnick finds new lead role on foundation board
Foundation board member Jon Warnick, of Carbondale, has a new role on that board. He is shifting from board treasurer to chairman, bringing his financi
a
l expertise and follow-through skills to an even higher level of leadership.
“The foundation board is in very good shape, and Doris Dewton is such a wonderful addition,” Warnick says. “The foundation is in a strong financial position and is on solid footing in spite of the economy.”
And Warnick sees CMC’s recent announcement that it will seek approval to offer selected four-year degrees as a positive one for the foundation.
“As we look to the future, this is going to offer opportunities and challenges for the foundation,” he says. “We’re looking forward to supporting all our students.”
What do these CMC boards do?
The CMC Board of Trustees comprises seven members who oversee and set the college’s overall policies, select and evaluate the college president, approve the budget, establish goals and monitor the college’s progress. Registered voters throughout the district elect all unpaid board members from the counties within the college’s district. Each board member serves a four-year term, with a two-term limit.
Members of the CMC Foundation Board of Directors volunteer to serve the CMC Foundation, the college’s fundraising arm. They do this by offering their expertise in establishing and encouraging giving programs, such as capital campaigns and scholarships. Currently, there are 17 members on the foundation board. In addition, the college president and the chair of the board of trustees are ex officio, nonvoting members.
